GARDENING CALENDAR
LYNN RAWE, COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT – HORTICULTURE
TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
April 23, 2005
- Prune spring blooming shrubs after blooms have faded. This would include wisteria and spirea.
- Plant tropical annuals such as Mexican heather, bougainvilleas, mandevillas and allamandas for flowers all summer long.
- Fertilize St. Augustine, bermuda and other warm season grasses with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Many soil tests reveal that phosphorus and potassium have high levels in the San Antonio area. Ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) can be used. Slow release fertilizers are the more costly but have many advantages.
- Watch for fungal spot on red tip photinias. Control with fungicide and remove old leaves as they fall.
