GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS AGRILIFE EXTENSION SERVICE

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

The spring vegetable garden will be underway soon. Evaluate successes and failures from the fall and winter plantings. Gardening should be made fun as well as a learning experience. Especially, when we get children involved.

Supplement feed for the fall planted strawberries with 2-3 pounds of Texas greensand acidifier per 100 square feet and fertilize every three weeks with a 4-2-3 analysis.

Prune and cleanup roses at this time. Climbers’ canes may be separated, but no training or pruning until after they bloom.

Looking to add grapes on an arbor, trellis or fence? The two best for our area are Champanelle and Black Spanish.

The best blackberries to add to your garden would be Rosborough and Kiowa. Last years new growth will be this years fruiting wood.
