BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

Warm season turfgrass types, which include Floratam St. Augustine, TiffWay 419 Bermuda, and El Toro Zoysia, should be fertilized with a slow-release nitrogen formulation. Such brands include, the 19-5-9 Independent Label as well as the Scotts Super Turf Builder 32-0-4 analysis.

Mow turfgrasses with a mulching mower to incorporate the grass clippings back into the soil to re-release ‘free’ nutrients.

If bagging of grass clippings are necessary, do not place them on the curve in a plastic bag and use up space in are overburden landfills. Better yet, spread the clippings out to dry and incorporate them into a well balanced compost pile.

Use a water-soluble plant food such as a 20-20-20 or 6-12-6 analysis for the first four waterings of recently planted annuals and perennials.
