GARDENING CALENDAR

BEXAR COUNTY

August 13, 2005

  • Fall-blooming perennials, such as Salvia greggili and S. farinancea, Mexican marigold mint (Tegetes lucida) chrysanthemums, physostegia and Salvia leucantha, should be pruned periodically during the summer to keep them compact.
  • A late-summer pruning of rosebushes can be beneficial. Prune out dead canes and any weak, brushy growth. Cut back tall, vigorous bushes to about 30 inches. After pruning, apply fertilizer, and water thoroughly. If a preventative disease control program has been maintained, your rose buses should be ready to provide an excellent crop of flowers this fall.
  • Don’t allow plants with green fruit or berries to suffer from lack of moisture.
  • Start building a new compost pile to accommodate the coming fall leaf accumulation.
