GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

April 21, 2007

  • Control thrips insect on roses and other plants with a systemic insecticide like acephate or disulfoton.
  • Do not mow wildflowers until seed has properly matured.
  • Thin peach tree fruits to one peach every six-to-ten inches apart. Remember a peach tree only needs about 10% of its possible 5,000 flowers to set fruit for a nice crop.
  • Feed all resprouting plants growing in the ground with a 3-1-2 analysis such as a 19-5-9 ratio.
  • ‘Don’t Bag’ lawn clippings. Mow desired actively growing turf grass every seven days with a mulching blade and remove no more then 1/3 of the existing canopy at any given time. Let the free fertilizer clippings fall back into building the soil or let them dry out and incorporate them into the compost heap.
