Range Evaluation, Pasture ID, Soils, Wool & Mohair Judging is Wednesday, April 29th in Junction. Mohair Judging and Evaluation – Judge two classes of mohair and complete an evaluation form on each class. Evaluate 20 fleeces for grade, staple length and yield. Range & Pasture Grass Identification – Identify and classify 40 to 50 live or mounted grass specimens according to their life span, season of growth, origin, and grazing value for livestock and wildlife. A grass list is available from Dr. Barron Rector. Range Evaluation – Contestants identify 20 to 40 range plants; determine use, condition, site and practices for range area; and evaluate four range plots. A master plant list is available from Dr. Barron Rector. Soil Judging – Judge four soil profiles with 20 minutes allowed for each. Determine the soil characteristics of the profiles and make interpretations based on observation. Wool Judging & Evaluation – Judge two classes of wool and complete an evaluation form on each class. Evaluate 20 fleeces for grade, staple length and yield.
These judging contests are for teams of 3 – 4 members or an individual in each 4-H age division. Juniors – 8 – 10, Intermediates – 11-13 and Seniors – 14-19 all ages as of August 31, 2014.
