September 9 2006 Timely Tips

GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY

  • Wildflower seeds should be sown this month into weed-free, well tilled soil.
  • Remove weak, unproductive growth from roses, to stimulate new growth for fall beauty.
  • Remember to water plants with green berries or fruit to prevent them from drying out. Hollies will frequently drop their fruit and nandinas will not produce berries under drought conditions.
  • Keep an eye on your sweet potatoes; they are probably ready to harvest. Remember to cure them before eating, they taste a lot better.
  • Colorful plants in bedding plant form are still available at local nurseries. You can always fill in, or brighten a corner, with a few bedding plants, even in the fall.
