September 7 2007 Timely Tips

GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

September 7, 2007

  • Continue to feed container and hanging baskets plants with a water-soluble fertilizer every 7- 10 days, consisting of a 20-20-20 or 6-12-6 analysis. The more often you water, the more often you need to supplemental feed, due to nutrients being leached out of the containers.
  • The next time you’re potting up plants; always use the right selection of plant for sun or shade with an appropriate size pot. Work with a premium potting mix and add liberal amounts of a 14-14-14 container fertilizer.
  • Insects will be in “full swing” and their populations “full blown” by now. For further identification of what bugs you have and how to control them, see: http://citybugs.tamu.edu.
  • Divide perennials like daylily and iris now. Give half to the neighbors and replant the other half.
  • Add generous amounts of compost to all beds.
  • Keep an eye on your sweet potatoes; they are probably ready to harvest. Remember to cure them before eating, they taste a lot better.
