The last expected frost date for South Texas is mid-March. Still take caution in putting out tomato transplants out early without covering their cages with N-Sulate winter protection cover.

For ample yields and quality fruit production, tomatoes prefer a large size cage. Such cages should be between 4 to 5 feet in height with a 16 to 20 inch diameter. Cages should also be anchored down to support the top heaviness and fruit load of the plant.

Heat setting-determinate and semi-determinate tomatoes are most suited for our harsh dry climate. Such popular and proven names include: Amelia, Celebrity, BHN 444, Heatwave Select, Sun Master, Solar Fire, Sun Pride, and the newest Phoenix and Sweet Cherry BHN 968 (Dwarf Cherry Surprise) tomatoes.

Tomatoes grow best and produce the highest yields in a full sun location with deep organically amended soil. Keep tomato plants adequately moist and properly fertilized.
