District 4-H Judging Contests – Soil Judging or Range Evaluation or Pasture ID or  Wool & Mohair – DUE

April 5, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

These judging contests are designed for teams of 3 – 4 members in the same age division (Junior – grades 3 – 5, Intermediate (grades 6 – 8, Senior – Grades 9 – 12) to demonstrate their skills in evaluation and observation.  Members use  the knowledge and skills they have about the subject matter to place the class from best to worst and also develop public speaking skills through learning how to present reasons on why they placed a class as they did.  Registration will be on 4-H Connect from  Mar. 27th – Apr. 5th. Select “2016-2017 District 10 Spring Roundup”.  Cost is $10 per individual payable by credit card.  Late fee is $35 until April 6th.

Contests are Thursday, May 4th  at Gillespie County Fairgrounds, 530 Fair Dr., Fredericksburg, Tx.

You must be academically eligible to compete at these District Contests.  Eligibility form is available here and is due to our office by Monday, April 17th 

Soil Judging – Judge four soil profiles with 20 minutes allowed for each.  Determine the soil characteristics of the profiles and make interpretations based on observation.

Mohair Judging and Evaluation – Judge two classes of mohair and complete an evaluation form on each class. Evaluate 20 fleeces for grade, staple length and yield.

Range & Pasture Grass Identification – Identify and classify 40 to 50 live or mounted grass specimens according to their life span, season of growth, origin, and grazing value for livestock and wildlife. A grass list is available from Dr. Barron Rector.

Range Evaluation – Contestants identify 20 to 40 range plants; determine use, condition, site and practices for range area; and evaluate four range plots. A master plant list is available from Dr. Barron Rector.

Wool Judging & Evaluation – Judge two classes of wool and complete an evaluation form on each class.  Evaluate 20 fleeces for grade, staple length and yield.  See more study materials on the State 4-H website at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/range-science/.
