• With the mild winter to date, most mid-to-late spring and summer blooming perennials show no signs of winter dieback. At this time, hedge plants back by no more than half of their total height. Replenishing the organic mulch in and around the plants and fertilizing them will make them burst out this spring.
• The best way to minimize weed problems in turfgrass is simple general maintenance. This includes proper mowing, watering efficiently and a discipline nutritional program. A strong and aggressively growing turfgrass tends to choke out most weed types.
• The last expected frost date for South Texas is mid-March. However, when it comes to planting spring tomato transplants, take caution setting out plants to early without covering their cages with N-Sulate winter protection cover for about three weeks.
• Spot apply liquid broadleaf weed killers on warm days to eliminate hard to get rid of henbit, chickweed, dandelions, clover and non-grassy weeds. Always read and follow label instructions.
