GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY

May 28, 2005

  • To control caterpillars and other worms, purchase a product containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This bacterial insecticide is harmless to everything except caterpillars. They eat it and die. Just ask any nursery/garden center person for a BT product.
  • Remove flower buds from caladiums, coleus, mums and santolina. This will keep the plants growing vigorously.
  • Keep tomatoes evenly moist to prevent blossom end rot. Mulch 2-3 inches with organic material being careful not to put mulch against the stem of the plant.
  • Watch for spider mites on plants. As the temperature heats up, spider mite populations will increase. Spray with an approved miticide containing kelthane or the organic controls of neem oil and liquid seaweed.
