GARDENING CALENDAR
TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

- Kick off the fall season with beautiful color. Consider, planting the San Antonio hardy perennial Fall Aster. This plant will give you gorgeous purple-bluish flowers with a lovely yellow center.
- Rejuvenate heat stressed geraniums, impatiens and begonias by lightly pruning, fertilizing and watering. If not, consider replacing them with colorful fall mums.
- Add generous amounts of enriched organic compost to all beds, shrubs, and trees. As well as a two inch top layer of an organic living mulch. This will build the soil, cut back on weeds and help insulate for the winter.
- Cut way back on the lawn irrigation this month to avoid brown patch. If you already have brown patch or other diseases in the lawn, treat it with a fungicide.
- This is the best time to plant bluebonnet seeds. Plant the seeds now, so that the young plants can over-winter as a rosette plant and bloom next spring. Keep a real close eye on pill bugs; they like to eat the leaves of the young plants.
