TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

March 17, 2007

For areas where space is limited, plant your favorite flowers and vegetables in containers or hanging baskets. Use Texas Cooperative Extension recommended varieties which can be found at: http://aggiehorticulture.tamu.edu/PLANTanswers/vegvar.html

Don’t forget to keep onions and cole crops well-fertilized with one cup of slow-release lawn fertilizer such as 19-5-9 analysis per 10 feet of row this month. Thin out onions to four inches apart. Use the thinned ones for green onions.

Fertilize pecan trees with 19-5-9 or a similar high nitrogen fertilizer. Begin to use zinc sprays at the bud break.

Transplant warm season vegetables such tomatoes and peppers after the chance of the last freeze.

Purple Martin birdhouses should be cleaned and ready for the birds that will be arriving soon.
