GARDENING CALENDAR

BEXAR COUNTY  BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

Side-dress all actively growing vegetables every three weeks with a high accelerated slow-release nitrogen 19-5-9 analysis. Vegetables are short term heavy feeding crops and must be feed often in order to produce large and satisfactory yields.

Sharpen lawn mower blades and tune up the mower to get ready for spring action. Look at all other gardening tools for proper maintenance issues.

Peonies can’t be successfully grown here, however, consider planting dahlia tubers as a close substitute at this time.

Old and well established summer and fall blooming perennials, including cannas, mallows, fall asters, mums, and perennial salvias may be rejuvenated now by thinning to help increase their fullness and bloom cycle.

Thin back and remove any dead leaves or sections in groundcover beds of Asian jasmine, monkey grass or liriope at this time.
