GARDENING CALENDAR
TEXAS AGRILIFE EXTENSION SERVICE
BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ
September 25, 2010
- Pro-active ways to cut back on excessive watering in your turfgrass would be to core aerate and top-dress with one half inch of finely screened enriched compost.
- Cut way back on supplemental irrigation to the lawn going into the fall season.
- Plan to direct seed wildflowers from late September through October. Check supplies now and order seed for planting in open and sunny weed free areas. Consider bluebonnet, Indian paintbrush, coneflower, fire-wheel, black-eyed Susan, evening primrose, and many others. Soils should be lightly cultivated prior to planting and sufficiently kept moist.
- Rejuvenate heat stressed geraniums, impatiens and begonias by lightly pruning, fertilizing, and watering. If not, consider replacing them with colorful fall mums or asters.
