GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS AGRILIFE EXTENSION SERVICE

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

If leaves on older, established trees are turning brown and dropping, it is in response to the prolonged heat and dry weather. Most gardeners have been supplementing deep watering about an inch to two inches at the tree’s drip line once every third week since last September.

If you are late in getting your fall tomato transplants in the ground, look for large, well-defined one-gallon container transplants which are heat setting selections.

Migrating hummingbirds will be busy at feeders and blooming perennials such as firebush, salvia and firespike.

Local independent nursery owner/managers have recently returned from their state convention. Keep a good eye on some great end of summer clearance and early fall planting specials.
