  • Plant cool weather vegetable transplants at this time. Consider planting Green Magic broccoli, Cheers cabbage, and Snow Crown cauliflower. For a full listing of recommended fall vegetables, visit this Bexar County Extension link at http://bexar-tx.tamu.edu/HomeHort/F4Best/nFallVegPlantList.htm.
  • Fall is for Planting and is the best time to replace drought-stricken plants. Planting in the fall gives roots time to get established before the summer heat makes it difficult for them to grow.
  • This is a great time to plant cannas, day lilies, bearded irises, Shasta daisies, and wood violets for spring bloom.
  • Feed citrus or any cold-sensitive plants this month but no later. A later application of fertilizer would produce new growth that could easily freeze with only a light frost. One application with a 4-2-3 or 6-2-4 analysis is plenty ’til spring and not so risky.
  • If you are planting bulbs, consider naturalizing a few in the lawn or growing them in pots. These make great spring gifts and enable you to enjoy blooming bulbs indoors and out in the spring. Do use a bulb food when planting; you will enjoy the results.
