Having problems growing plants in your landscape or vegetable garden? Maybe a soil test can help? Collect and mail soil samples for testing now. You can pick up a soil test form at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service office located at 3355 Cherry Ridge, Suite 212, or call 210-467-6575. Finalize your spring vegetable garden design in preparation for planting the next few months. Consider adding drip or soaker style irrigation for more efficient watering. Making every drop count is crucial during these dry periods.
Planting bare-root fruit and pecan trees during the latter parts of January through February is the most practical and cost efficient way for plant establishment for both commercial orchards and the home gardener.
Pecan nuts are tasty and good for you; they contain 70% Oleic Oil which is the same as olive oil.
Looking to grow pecan trees in this part of the state? The best adapted varieties are Sioux, Pawnee, Desirable and the newest selection named Nacono.
Clean out your bluebird, wren, martin, and other birdhouses to get them ready for February. Martin scouts and first-breeding birds of other species will be in town this February.
