GARDENING CALENDAR

TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

BEXAR COUNTY BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ

  • There is still time to plant bedding plants for color in your garden. In fact, it is too late to plant seeds, so you need to depend on bedding plants to spruce up the areas you may not have thought about earlier. Available now in the nurseries are amaranthus, ageratum, celosia, coleus, marigold, periwinkle, purslane, portulaca, salvia and zinnia. Look at planting larger more established plants instead of small individual cell packs.
  • Water your lawn and garden thoroughly during the hot weather. Remember that infrequent deep watering is better than frequent sprinklers.
  • Chrysanthemums need to be pinched back now to encourage branching and develop a bushy, full, fall appearance.
  • Annual plants in bloom need to be fertilized, as do vegetables which are produced heavily. Consider a water soluble fertilizer with a 6-12-6 analysis every seven to ten days.
  • Mulch is necessary to conserve water moisture during the summer. If you have not mulched your flower and vegetable gardens, do so now. You get the added benefit of reducing weeding as well. Shredded cedar or hardwood living mulch tends to be the best.
