Gardening New Year’s resolutions

  • I will aspire to be a better gardener by spending more quality time outside as well as getting the family and community involved in growing and consuming more fresh vegetables.
  •  I will plant more shade and fruit trees. Independent nurseries have the appropriate selection of Extension recommended trees to choose from. With our mild winter weather, it is the ideal time to plant dormant trees because their tops are not actively growing and their root systems have a jump on spring.
  •  I will add to the aesthetics and functionality of my landscape with hardscapes. This not only decreases lawn space but utilizes less water through adding walkways, raised planters or any other non-plant specific features.
  •  I will practice IPM (Integrated Pest Management).  Before any bug, weed or other pest is sprayed for, I will identify the problem first, then find out why it is there, then treat if need be with the most effective but lest toxic pesticide.
