GARDENING CALENDAR
TEXAS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
BEXAR COUNTY
BY DAVID RODRIGUEZ
September 7, 2007
Continue to feed container and hanging baskets plants with a water-soluble fertilizer every 7- 10 days, consisting of a 20-20-20 or 6-12-6 analysis. The more often you water, the more often you need to supplemental feed, due to nutrients being leached out of the containers.
The next time you're potting up plants; always use the right selection of plant for sun or shade with an appropriate size pot. Work with a premium potting mix and add liberal amounts of a 14-14-14 container fertilizer.
Insects will be in "full swing" and their populations "full blown" by now. For further identification of what bugs you have and how to control them, see: http://citybugs.tamu.edu.
Divide perennials like daylily and iris now. Give half to the neighbors and replant the other half.
Add generous amounts of compost to all beds.
Keep an eye on your sweet potatoes; they are probably ready
to harvest. Remember to cure them before eating, they taste a lot better.
