Converse 4-H is proud to sponsor the June newsletter. Converse 4-H meets the first Monday of each month-starting again in September. We meet at the Jay Hill Center at Boysville and we would like for you to join us. Converse 4-H is the oldest continuing club in Texas.
IT’S OFFICIAL - San Antonio Livestock Exposition announced that ten $10,000 college scholarships will be awarded to Bexar County 4-H members. Scholarships must be used for a major in Agriculture and Life Sciences that lead to a career in agriculture or agribusiness; must be used at a Texas college or university. Scholarship applications are due to our office by June 30. We will need the original and four (4) copies. Call our office if you are interested in an application.

New Adult Leaders Elected!
This training is for leaders who want to be new club managers and existing club managers. It is very important that someone from your club attend this meeting. Two dates are available for you to attend: July 31, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at the County Extension office OR August 3, 7 p.m. at the County Extension office.
Anything and everything you need to run your club will be handed out at this meeting. Please mark your calendar NOW. We will give out new file boxes to all club managers. If you already have a file box, please bring it and we will help you update it.
Our our new address is 3355 Cherry Ridge Dr. S-212, San Antonio, Texas 78230, near I-10 and 410 intersection. Map to our new location is on the website under 4-H Contacts or Events. Our office is off of Cherry Ridge on Briar Ridge near Pinebrook. We are right across the street from the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Our office is in the North Court building. Our sign is not up yet, but we are in S-212. When you get a chance, come and visit us at our new location.
For the 2000-2001 show season (San Antonio, Houston and Bexar County) turkey poults orders are due to the County Extension office by Monday, June 26. Submit your request in writing with your name (first and last name of each child exhibiting), address, social security # (of child exhibiting), phone number, parents first name and how many birds you are ordering. Please specify what shows you will be exhibiting at (S.A.L.E., Houston or Bexar County). Families are limited to a minimum of 10 and a maximum order of 50 birds (per family) at $3.50 each. Entry fees for S.A.L.E., Houston and Bexar County will be paid separate when you fill out your entry cards for those shows. Make your check payable to Bexar County 4-H Fund.

Exhibit at Houston and Bexar County Shows
For your information: Poultry are very susceptible to many diseases and especially respiratory diseases. In order to keep a possible outbreak under control the shows have decided a terminal poultry show is best. None of the birds are returned to home flocks, so the chances of spreading poultry diseases then are greatly reduced.
Bexar County 4-H Association has been formed to promote outdoor activities focusing on the shooting sports and sportfishing for 4-H youth. If you are interested (youth or adult) we will be meeting on Monday, June 26 at 119 Prado (Olmos Park City Offices) at 7 p.m.
This is a carp fishing tournament open to all youth, leaders and parents. You may enter as many times as you wish with only one entry fee. Fishing can be done from the bank of a local creek, river, lake or pond. For more information contact our office.
Mr. Ching Po Lo from Taiwan will be visiting Texas July 1-August 3 and wants to learn about 4-H and life on a farm or ranch in Texas. Other families are needed for other visitors, contact our office for more information.

Place: Kendall County Fairgrounds, Boerne
There will be 42 classes of vegetables. All 4-H members are eligible to enter
this contest. Vegetable must come from the 4-H member’s garden or the family
garden. Contact the County Extension office for an entry form and guidelines.
Sign
up fast for the three-day HOT Salsa Camp. It will be at Boysville from 9:00
a.m. –3:30 p.m. August 1st-3rd. The first day will consist of Horticulture hands-on
learning activities. The second day of Food Safety & Nutrition lessons you will
make, taste and take home your own. And on the third day you will learn how
to design a small business and market a product.
This program is being offered for those 4-H members who are curious about the
HOT Salsa project but have not had the time to pursue it yet. We have opened
up the program to other counties as well and will fill it on a first-come, first-served
basis. There is a $10 fee for the three-day program and a registration form
(in this newsletter) that must be filled out. Call Karen or Rene for more information.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. at Boysville. We will go over trimming, hair coat care, and showmanship. Bring your clippers, your trimming chutes and your calf. We are also requesting an RSVP by June 15th for a hamburger lunch that will be free to all of those that RSVP, but $20 for those that do not! Call Joe at 467-6575 to reserve your spot today.
Now that we have most of the steer and heifer projects on feed, it’s time to think about hoof trimming. Proper hoof trimming is necessary to compete in today’s cattle show rings. I will provide hoof trimming free to any 4-H member in Bexar County. If your beef project needs hoof trimming, call Joe at 467-6575 to set up an appointment. I will do the trimming at my house, after 5:30 p.m. during the week and on weekends with an appointment.
The Bexar County Junior Livestock Show and all major shows require steers, lambs, goats and hogs to be validated in accordance with the current Texas Validation System. Steer validation will be June 22, at Boysville from 3-8 p.m. Lamb, goat and hog validation tag order dates have not been set at this time. Watch for the dates and order form in the next newsletter.
A small scholarship with a great internship connected is available. They are looking for both high school seniors who will go to college and major in Natural Resource related majors and for college age juniors and seniors. The scholarship award is approximately $600. Awardees are also given paid summer internships. Call Karen for more information.
The CORE Program is being offered as an opportunity to enhance your knowledge
and skills in Natural Resources. An 8 session course to cover topics such as:
aquatics, wildlife, conservation ethics, soil and water conservation and firearm
safety. Meeting dates are: June 17th, July 15th, Aug. 12th, Sept. 16th, and
Oct. 21st.
Sessions will be held at the Boysville 4-H Meeting Room in Converse. For more

This meeting is for all parents, teen and adult volunteers who want to help
schedule dates for project trainings, special events and activities, contests,
etc. for the 2000-2001 4-H calendar. It is very important that your club is

of what trainings you would like to discuss on the form enclosed in this newsletter.
You will not need eligibility forms for any events occurring during the summer. Example: State Roundup, District Horse Show, Record Book Judging, etc. If you have any questions, please call.

Ft. Sam Youth Riders 4-H met on May 12. They would
like to thank Glen Faulk for his help and Mr. Pisseri for donating hay and feed
for use to give to Brighter Days. They are looking forward to attending Schlitterbahn

East Central 4-H met on May 1. They discussed the
end of the year party and decided to go to Schlitterbahn in June. They also
elected officers for the 200-2001 4-H year. President-Christina Arnold, 1st
Vice President-Jessica Geistweidt, 2nd Vice President-Kim Geistweidt, 3rd Vice
President-Merritt Mock, Secretary-Krystal Nichols, Treasurer-Ashleigh Geistweidt,
Council Delegate-Matt Kraus and Megan Kraus, Reporter-Jessica Ciomperlick, Parliamentarian-Cowboy
Mock and Historian-Ashley Shaw. They discussed the PWC (People Who Care) $100
dance that is coming up in May. This was their last meeting for the 1999-2000
year. They want to wish everyone a great summer and they’ll see you next year.

Leon Valley 4-H met on May 8. They went over last
month’s Craft Project Easter Eggs; Fashion Show Project results and enjoyed
many talks and demonstrations given by club members. They discussed the planning
of the end of the year party and getting started on record books. They will
be electing new officers soon. Mrs. Harris gave everyone a bottle of bubbles
and they had fun blowing bubbles. Reporter: Jacqueline Garcia.
Encino 4-H met on May 10. The end of the year party
was scheduled for June 8. Elections took place and the new officers are as follows:

Blue Ridge 4-H met on May 20. They went to Alamo Area
Arabian Horse Show. They audited the riders and discussed the flaws on how to

Blue Ridge 4-H met on May 23. Four of their members
took a Boy Scout group on a educating tour of a farm/ranch. Thanks to Alisann
Gunthery and Azgard Farms, Inc. Five of their members are part of a community
service organization: Riders of Azgard Search and Rescue Team. Their president
announced he will be resigning to take a job in Australia.

We have had many questions about Record Books from 4-H leaders and members who want to do their best on this important project. I hope we have found the best way to offer assistance.

Joe Taylor and myself will be available upon appointment during those times to review specific record book questions and strategies. REMINDER, YOU MUST CALL TO SET A TIME TO MEET. This will ensure everyone gets the assistance they want. Call Pam early to set a time to come in that day.
Junior and senior record book forms are available on computer diskette. If you would like one, give Pam a call. We need to know what program your computer has (WordPerfect, Word, etc.). If you bring us a diskette it’s free, if you need a diskette its $1.
All record books or project forms are due for judging to the County Extension office by July 7th , 10 a.m.
A 2000 year pin application form must be clipped to the inside front cover of your record book or attached to the front of the project form. The application form must be signed by your Club Manager or it will not be accepted.
A member receives a 4-H year pin by submitting a project form only. A member receives a year pin plus a project medal when the complete record book is submitted. NOTE: A record book is required to be eligible for Bronze, Silver or Gold Star awards. Contact your club manager or record book leader for a copy of the year pin application or call our office.
Club Manager please submit the name of your club’s Rookie of the Year by July 7th, 10 a.m. so that recognition certificates can be prepared for the County Awards Program. Please check your Awards and Recognition Handbook for qualifications.
If you are applying for one of these awards, you must fill out a pre-application form enclosed in this newsletter. This form is due to the County Exctension office by June 16th.
REMINDER: If you are submitting a record book for the bronze or silver star awards, you must submit your original record book, plus two copies. If you are submitting a record book for the gold star award, you must submit your original record book, plus four copies. Copies will not be allowed to be made at our office. The copies will be used for judging. Copies can be one sided or two sided, copy quality is not judged.
The Gold Star quota for Bexar County this year is 5 . If you are applying for this award, review the Awards and Recognition handbook to make sure you qualify. Then fill out the Star Award Pre-form enclosed in this newsletter. When you turn in your record book make sure you fill out the year pin application and this year, you’ll need to complete the Gold Star Award Biographical Sketch form. Interviews are scheduled for one day only, July 20th, make sure you will be available that day.
Club scrapbooks are due for judging on or before July 7th. There are cash awards for 1st – 3rd places. Scrapbook guidelines have been sent to all Project Leaders and Club Managers. If you need a copy, give us a call.
Bexar County is trading books with two other counties. Judging of the other counties books will be Friday, July 7th, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the County Extension office. If you would like to help judge, please give us a call.
This meeting is a good time to provide input on how 4-H projects and contests are organized. Members have the opportunity to run for leadership positions on various project committees. If you are interested, please contact our office for more information.

News on a 4-H Alumni member:
Darrell Walter, alumni of East Central 4-H was a member of the Texas
A&M spring poultry judging team. They attended the National Poultry Judging
Contest held in Baton Rouge, Lousiana in April. The A&M team placed 1st at Nationals
and Darrell was 5th high individual in judging broiler & breeders.
