New Horse Leaders Elected

Cowgirl with horse

Congratulations to our new 2000-2001 Bexar County 4-H Horse Leader Association officers.

Veronica Valdez: President
Larry Brooks: V-President
Sylvanne Brooks: Treasurer
Jeanie Milikien: Secretary
Gracie Burciaga: Show Secretary

The Bexar County Horse Leader Association has requested that the following statement be printed on their behalf: Representation at BCHLA meetings is a requirement in order to ensure that all disciplines of horsemanship and equitation are properly scheduled during qualifying and playday event planning. Under representation may result in scaled back or dropping from future horse shows.

At the next leaders meeting it will be decided and voted upon as to whether to move English classes as the last event at the horse shows or remove them from rotation completely.

Good luck to all those Bexar County 4-H Horse show contestants who will go to state. (R.M.) To Top

4-H Horse Leaders’ Meeting

Mark your calendar for our next business meeting:

Date: Monday, August 28th
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: County Extension Office

We will plan for the new 2000-2001 4-H year. All adult and teen volunteers interested in horses and horsemanship activities should make every effort to attend this meeting. (R.M.) To Top

Keeping Horses Cool

Cowboy feeding horse

Research shows that in performance horses, the internal body temperatures can go above 105 F. when a horse is being worked intensely, during hot Texas days.

We have a fact sheet that includes suggestions to eliminate or decrease the frequency of heat related problems such as hyperthermia, heat shock, heat strokes, anhydrosis, etc. in performance horses during the summer. (R.M.) To Top

Lamb and Swine Validation Program

This validation program will meet identification requirements and ensure that the integrity of our lamb and swine-feeding program is maintained at the highest level.

Major shows include the following statement in their 2000-2001 premium list:

“To be eligible to exhibit in the 2000-2001 Junior Market Show, all lambs and swine must be validated in the Texas 4-H and FFA Validation Program. Each entry must have been recorded on a 4-H or FFA Validation Form Master List completed by the County Validation Committee.”

The Bexar County Junior Livestock show WILL require lambs and hogs to be validated in accordance with the state validation program.

The cost is $3.50 per lamb and $3.50 per hog. Deadline to send in order form for lambs will be Monday, Sept. 11th. Lamb validation form is enclosed in this newsletter. Date for hogs will be set at a later time.

The committee realizes that this is very early and before many animals are purchased, but this must be done prior to the state deadline in order to make enough tags for the entire state. The best recommendation is to order more than you plan, but realize these are not refundable. (J.T) To Top
